Table of Contents

Since its establishment, Haibara has constantly offered high-quality paper products, mostly Japanese paper, in an era-appropriate fashion. The products of Haibara, which combine unique design and technology, have always been ahead of their time, establishing a new standard, and have been acknowledged by many people, including renowned authors and cultural personalities, establishing the company as a distinctive brand.

In the Taisho era novel “Anya Koro” by Naoya Shiga, the protagonist, Kensaku Tokito, tells his friend who is departing for France, “Why don’t you take some Haibara’s chiyogami as a gift?”
This statement implies that Haibara’s chiyogami paper would be appreciated more than a typical Japanese gift.

In addition, the writer Ogai Mori was a family favorite of Haibara products. Ogai himself and his daughter, writer Mari Mori, used Haibara-made graph paper and mentioned the store in their writings.
Shige Mori, Ogai’s wife and a writer, was particularly fond of Haibara paper products and used Haibara-made chiyogami paper called “oshidori” as the endpapers of her book “Adabana.”

Other great writers of the time, such as Koizumi Yakumo, Takamura Kotaro, Tanizaki Junichiro, and Akutagawa Ryunosuke, also used Haibara products. Their favorite products included manuscript paper, colored paper, mizuhiki, fans, and paper for shoji screen doors. This indicates that Haibara washi was an integral part of their daily lives.

The “Haibara Spirit” is not content with the traditions and skills inherited through its long history; rather, it is flexible to the needs of the times. We seek to keep sparking the minds of professionals in a wide range of fields and be a presence that is always growing.

Chiyogami titled “Oshidori” was utilized in the works of Mori Shige, the wife of Mori Ogai and a writer. It is an auspicious pattern portraying two lovely birds, oshidori, a symbol of marital bliss and harmony, floating amid the waves.
Since its founding, Haibara has commissioned a great number of artists to create designs.

From 1920 through 1959, Kafu Nagai authored “Danchotei Nichijo” for 40 years.
It is regarded as the pinnacle of diary literature, containing everyday situations from the prewar to postwar eras, as well as criticisms and reflections on the world. Kafu utilized “blue 10-line ruled manuscript paper” made by Haibara, to write this piece.

Kafu also described his visits to Haibara over each of the four seasons in his writing. Haibara is currently offering reprints of the original “Nichijo-sen” writing paper”, based on the design used by Kafu.

Authors, like Kafu, incorporated their favorite Haibara goods into their daily lives in a “personalized manner.”
